Concrete Around Lake Worth Beach's Historic Cottages
Lake Worth Beach has one of the largest collections of early-1900s cottages in the state, and concrete contractors here work around them on almost every job. A 2016 book cited by Wikipedia counts about 1,000 cottages built between 1913 and 1949, the largest concentration of that type of home in Florida. The city had 42,219 residents and 17,476 housing units in 2020. We pour and replace front walks, entry steps, driveways, patios and slabs, and we repair sections that have broken or sunk.
Six historic districts
The city government treats six areas as historic districts: College Park, Northeast Lucerne, Old Lucerne, Old Town, Southeast Lucerne and South Palm Park. Three are on the National Register. Old Lucerne alone has 346 structures, 218 of them contributing, built from about 1913 to 1951, and College Park has 123 residences, 90 contributing, mostly from 1925 to 1949.
On cottage lots, the concrete is small but visible: a narrow walk from the sidewalk, two or three porch steps, a single-car drive or ribbon strips to a back garage. We keep the scale right. That usually means a plain broom finish, tooled edges and joint spacing that suits a small front yard, rather than a wide modern slab. If the property is in a historic district, we check with the city about review requirements before work begins.
Storm history in a lagoon-front town
Lake Worth Beach incorporated as the town of Lake Worth on June 14, 1913, and voters changed the name to Lake Worth Beach in 2019. It has taken several hard storms. Wikipedia says the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane demolished about 600 homes and damaged 1,500, and Hurricane Wilma in 2005 destroyed 27 homes and damaged 2,491. After storms like those, walks and drives get crushed by fallen trees and cleanup equipment, and patched repairs from past storms are often what we end up replacing.
Small lots, careful access
Many lots here are narrow, with houses close to the side lines and alleys behind. We plan concrete delivery and pumping or wheelbarrow access before the pour date, protect neighboring yards, and form tight to existing walls without damaging old foundations. For alley garages, we can replace the apron and the drive while keeping alley access open as much as possible.

Lake Worth Beach Questions
Do I need historic review to replace my front walk?
If your home is in one of the city's historic districts, exterior work visible from the street may need review. We check with the city before scheduling.
Can you pour a ribbon driveway?
Yes. Two concrete strips with grass between suit many cottage lots and keep more of the yard pervious.
How do you get concrete to a narrow back lot?
We plan access before the pour, using a pump or carts when the truck cannot reach, and protect neighboring yards along the way.
