Rural Concrete Work in Loxahatchee Groves
Loxahatchee Groves is a different kind of job for concrete contractors. It is a rural town of 3,355 people and 1,292 housing units at the 2020 census, with long frontages, canals and swales, and properties that keep horses, nurseries and equipment. A driveway here often crosses a culvert, and a slab may need to hold a tractor rather than a sedan. We pour driveways, barn and shed slabs, equipment pads, patios and walks, and we work to the Town's own driveway policy.
A town shaped by its canals
The land was part of about 2,000,000 acres bought by the Southern States Land and Timber Company in 1902. Wikipedia says the Palm Beach Loxahatchee Company bought 6,500 acres from it, called the land Loxahatchee Farms, and built almost 30 miles of canals and roads, maintained first by the Loxahatchee Groves Drainage District, now the Loxahatchee Groves Water Control District. The West Palm Beach Canal (C-51) was completed in 1917, the same year the area was settled. The town itself is young: voters approved incorporation 458 to 350 in October 2006, and it became official on November 1, 2006.
The Town's driveway and culvert policy
The Town's Public Works Department adopted a Subdivision Driveway Installation, Repair and Removal Policy in 2024. It calls for 15-inch culverts unless the Town decides otherwise, in approved pipe types such as H-20 rated HDPE or A-2000 PVC. For concrete driveways over a culvert, the detail drawings show at least 6 inches of 4,000 psi concrete over at least 4 inches of compacted sand, with at least 8 inches of cover over the pipe. Swale slopes should be 4 to 1 or flatter, and disturbed swales go back in Bahia sod, not Floratam.
A permit is needed for a new driveway, a culvert replacement, a change in driveway type such as base rock to concrete, and a driveway removal. Like-kind replacement and minor repairs do not need one. The applicant requests a Sunshine 811 locate, Public Works sets survey stakes within 10 working days of the permit, and there is a form board or base inspection before the pour and a final inspection after.
Placement rules worth knowing early
The same policy says new driveways cannot be within 50 feet of an intersection, 100 feet of another driveway, or 30 feet of traffic-calming devices or signs, and headwalls and end posts are not allowed in Town easements. A property with frontage on two sides can have up to three driveways, with no single culvert longer than 40 feet. If you are planning a second entrance for a trailer or a barn, it pays to check these limits before you pick a spot.
Slabs that carry real loads
Behind the driveway, most of the concrete we pour in Loxahatchee Groves is working concrete: barn aisles, wash racks, feed rooms, equipment and generator pads, and shed or workshop floors. For those we build up the base, thicken edges where trucks turn, and slope the surface so washdown water drains out instead of standing. Patios and pool decks get the same base care with a finish chosen for bare feet.
